Summary

I have killed several people (some brutally, others calmly) and yet I currently languish in jail for a murder I did not commit。

When I think about what I actually did, I feel somewhat sad that nobody will ever know about the complex operation that I undertook。 Getting away with it is highly preferable, of course, but perhaps when I’m long gone, someone will open an old safe and find this confession。 The public would reel。 After all, almost nobody else in the world can possibly understand how someone, by the tender age of 28, can have calmly killed six members of her family。 And then happily got on with the rest of her life, never to regret a thing。

When Grace Bernard discovers her absentee millionaire father has rejected her dying mother’s pleas for help, she vows revenge, and sets about to kill every member of his family。 Readers have a front row seat as Grace picks off the family one by one – and the result is as and gruesome as it is entertaining in this wickedly dark romp about class, family, love… and murder。

But then Grace is imprisoned for a murder she didn’t commit。

Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive, perfect for fans of Killing Eve and My Sister, the Serial Killer。

It makes complete sense that she would be unable to kill Simon as soon as he started growing paranoid, and Mackie’s way of solving it with Harry is sensible。 But this ending felt like an easy way out, a way to hastily wrap up the book when there’s more to tell, and though Harry’s ending is clean, Grace’s is slightly anticlimactic and murky。 I hope this may mean a sequel, but somehow I’m not too sure。 I think I’ll just have to accept that this book personally wasn’t for me。 。。。more

I really wanted to give this 4 starts but the book started off really well and then it sort of just dragged after the third murder and it all just became a bit meh。 Also, when I was reading this book it made me feel as if I were reading a journal entry of mine, and I don't know how to feel about that。 I mean, not that I'm trying to do the same as Grace did, but the inner monologue/"witty" bits you know。 I really wanted to give this 4 starts but the book started off really well and then it sort of just dragged after the third murder and it all just became a bit meh。 Also, when I was reading this book it made me feel as if I were reading a journal entry of mine, and I don't know how to feel about that。 I mean, not that I'm trying to do the same as Grace did, but the inner monologue/"witty" bits you know。 。。。more

Sincerely a very solid book。I loved Grace as a character。 There were points in the middle section that I feel could have been narrowed a tad, but overall the flow and pacing of this book was great。 The twist was great and unexpected。I honestly wouldn't mind a sequel。 Sincerely a very solid book。I loved Grace as a character。 There were points in the middle section that I feel could have been narrowed a tad, but overall the flow and pacing of this book was great。 The twist was great and unexpected。I honestly wouldn't mind a sequel。 。。。more

I wanted to like this book more than what I did which is why only 3 stars。 It promised "Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive" and is for fans who also liked (which I did) My Sister, the Serial Killer。 I was very intrigued by the premise of someone being in prison for a murder she didn't commit but who had killed a number of people without anyone knowing about her involvement in their deaths。 I found it funny in a British, dry humour way。 You won't have laughing out loud moments througho I wanted to like this book more than what I did which is why only 3 stars。 It promised "Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive" and is for fans who also liked (which I did) My Sister, the Serial Killer。 I was very intrigued by the premise of someone being in prison for a murder she didn't commit but who had killed a number of people without anyone knowing about her involvement in their deaths。 I found it funny in a British, dry humour way。 You won't have laughing out loud moments throughout the book but will find the humour in her social commentary。 Compulsive, yes the main character is certainly that。 And, subversive, sure, to a point。Grace is writing her story about growing up and the revenge she took when she found out the name of her father who abandoned her mother after becoming pregnant with Grace。 I found her to be emotionally immature, possibly a sociopath or psychopath and a very self-centred snob who very much wanted to show prove how smart she really is。 For me, it's the child who never grew up but wants to be recognised as a smart adult that got annoying after a while。 I don't have to like the character, but do want to feel interested and invested in the person。 About halfway through the book, I found myself skimming a couple of paragraphs at a times when I found Grace's writing getting too wordy。I still wanted to root for Grace though, while reading the book。 The other characters weren't that fleshed out which didn't help and the twist at the end didn't add to the story。 I get it about how the men in the family treat the women but I wanted to see her get what she wanted because a lot of times in books, movies and TV shows, the "bad guy" rarely wins。One of my longest reviews because, again, I really wanted to like this book。 Overall, the book was fine, could have been better which is why only 3 stars。 。。。more

Slow going at first and the long chapters made it a little difficult to get into。 However, around half way through it was easy to adjust to the pace and became hard to put down。 Ending was a little disappointing with a new character being introduced out of nowhere。

A fun read and very entertaining。 I found the ending to be a bit of a let down however, not sure how I would have liked it to end but it just felt a bit jarring and out of step with the rest of the book。 Otherwise an overall good read。

Hands down one of my favorite books of all time。 From the writing to the story and the plot twist at the end, I was hooked the entire time and thoroughly entertained。 Grace, our protagonist, has got to be one of the best written female characters I’ve ever read; her self-consciousness throughout her murder spree, the fact that you don’t endorse what she’s doing necessarily but can’t help but root for her just a little bit… she’s a girlboss material girl through and through。 The comedy in this bo Hands down one of my favorite books of all time。 From the writing to the story and the plot twist at the end, I was hooked the entire time and thoroughly entertained。 Grace, our protagonist, has got to be one of the best written female characters I’ve ever read; her self-consciousness throughout her murder spree, the fact that you don’t endorse what she’s doing necessarily but can’t help but root for her just a little bit… she’s a girlboss material girl through and through。 The comedy in this book was top tier, quite literally the most I’ve laughed out loud out of any book I’ve ever read。 The switch between her early life, murder spree and time in jail never felt jarring, it flowed really well from one to the other。 The executed characters also were very distinct and had a lot of personality; for one they were all terrible people (except for the hippie cousin and his frogs)。 What was also surprising is that Grace does spend a lot of time musing and in her head; there are chapters where there is little to no dialogue but what was special was how it never felt boring and I never skimmed through the lines。 She was always saying something important or highlightable; Grace was just such an interesting character to read a POV from。 What’s very ironic is that she somehow get’s away with it all but sorta and she kinda gets her revenge but again not really。 As much as I rooted for her, I also was laughing a little bit at her in the end。 。。。more

Needless to say, this isn’t a cozy mystery。 Not with that title。 Grace is a psychopath。 She may be in jail for a murder she didn’t commit, but that’s not to say she’s innocent。 As she’s happy to recount to the reader in all the gory detail, she plotted and executed the murders of her father’s family。 Kudos to Mackie。 Grace may not be a sympathetic character, but she was oddly relatable and I was happy to go along for the ride as she dispatched one victim after another。 There’s a great dark, snar Needless to say, this isn’t a cozy mystery。 Not with that title。 Grace is a psychopath。 She may be in jail for a murder she didn’t commit, but that’s not to say she’s innocent。 As she’s happy to recount to the reader in all the gory detail, she plotted and executed the murders of her father’s family。 Kudos to Mackie。 Grace may not be a sympathetic character, but she was oddly relatable and I was happy to go along for the ride as she dispatched one victim after another。 There’s a great dark, snarky humor to Grace that I loved。 The plot was a tad uneven and there were times I felt a better editing job might have helped。 But that said, I desperately wanted to see how it would all play out。 There was a great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming。 This is great entertainment for those that aren’t squeamish。 Charlie Clive did a super job as Grace。 She made the character come alive for me。 。。。more
